Mosaic Muse

Tiles, tiles, tiles - where do I begin? ...creating your own one-of-a-kind handmade tiles makes for better mosaics.

I love to teach, but even more than that, I love to learn. I have long admired the beautiful mosaic pieces created by the incredibly talented Laurie Mika and have wanted to take an in-person class from her. Unfortunately I live a fair distance from where she teaches, so I decide to treat myself to her book, Mixed-Media Mosaics: Techniques and Projects Using Polymer Clay Tiles, Beads & Other Embellishments.

Upon receiving and reading this well-written guide from cover-to-beautiful-cover, I unearthed my bin of polymer clay and started making tiles. I absolutely enjoyed every minute of this creative process. I kept making and baking until I had quite a sizable container of tiles ranging from about a quarter-of-an-inch to an inch-and-a-half in size. I had so many tiles in fact that my finished piece is 11” x 14”.

I was so inspired by Laurie’s jewel tone colors that I repeated them on my piece. What a different change of pace for me, the ‘Queen of Rust’…

Taking another tip from Laurie, I added a printed image from a book to one of the tiles and ‘framed’ the picture with a piece of a belt buckle from my junk stash. Laurie also recommends using words in your mosaics, so you will see in the photo above I stamped the word ‘seek’ into the clay of one of the tiles.

The photo does not do this justice because of the reflection, but I just had to add an eye encased in glass.

If you are like me and have acquired loads of art supplies like polymer clay, beads, buttons, paint, glitter, stamps and embellishments, then add this terrific book to your studio. I highly recommend this imaginative resource for creating in mosaics!

Late Breaking Story: Masterclass

I have titled this post ‘Late Breaking Story’ because it is waaaay past due. I have been so busy that I did not even have time to share my most exciting Art News of the Year! And that news is I have my very own Masterclass, Artful Assemblage, via Mixed Up Creative Academy! Thanks to the amazing Katy Leitch, founder of Mixed Up Creative, I had (have) the opportunity to share an exclusive video package of tutorials! Apologies for all the exclamation marks in this paragraph, but I am pretty stoked about this, haha.

Another Late Breaking Story: E-book

Isn’t it a good thing I am not a reporter? My definition of a ‘Late Breaking Story’ means it is late…like really, really late. Next, I’ll find out we already put a man on the moon or something. But, better late than never, so I am here to announce I have an E-book, Assemblage Creations with Leslie Lineberry! Yahoo! I cannot thank Katy Leitch, owner/founder of Mixed Up Creative, enough for all the unbelievable opportunities she has given me!

A Short Story Of Two Journals, Chapter 2

I love vintage, so when I was asked to contribute to Mixed Up Creative Academy’s ‘Vintage Theme Collection’, I immediately agreed. Clearly this journal is very different from my faux wood book, but was just as enjoyable to create.

If you love vintage too, be sure and check out the course here. This little journal is only one project of the collection of tutorials available. You will definitely be inspired by the resident tutors to create your own bit of vintage whimsy.

Short Story of Two Journals

Journaling is like whispering to one’s self and listening at the same time.
— Mina Murray

I have been told that journaling is good for the soul and the mind as it is a proven practice to reduce stress and anxiety. Having said that, let me also state that I am a bad journal keeper. However, I love making journals. Here are two very different little books I have made for Mixed Up Creative Academy.

When I was asked to make a small journal for Mixed Up, I knew I wanted to make it from wood….well paper actually that I altered to look like wood. Scroll down for more pictures of my faux wood grained book.
